Well, being an IT graduate what you hope for is either to have a job with reasonable perks or to be working on your world changing startup. But is it what each of us get when we graduate ?

Simple answer is NO, but here are the few things what we should be doing as a freshmen IT student in order to get going our career.

a) Focus on your goals.

Not everyone has familiarity with their goals and focus on the thing which turns out not to be their desire or the field they want to pursue. Even I was pursuing Artificial Intelligence, Data Science but eventually limited myself into web and bit of mobile development through some tools. So, what you need is to find what pleases you doing day after day without being distracted from.

b) Make connections.

As the technology is growing and more people are diving into the field there is very tough competition on the market and even if you had the proper skills, you might feel you don’t have enought skills to join the market yet and that is great barrier in your life. Moreover, if you are thinking about starting up then making connnection while you are at college level makes really good sense as after being graduated you will have very less time to prove yourself and prevent yourself from giving up in despair. The point is make your connections with the people who might come handy in your life be it today or tomorrow.

c) Learning the basics.

As a students we are always in a hurry, as tech savvy students we are always in a hurry to learn cutting edge technologies which is rather good but the most important thing here is to learning the basics.

d) Best practices and conventions

In our student life we focus only on solving the problem in anyways possible not giving a damn about the best practices and conventions. As a students I didn’t even know the proper use of comments, what names to use as a variable and the most importantly I didn’t care about the DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself) principle. When I moved to professional life each PR(Pull Request) I made is being rejected as I don’t follow the conventions and had to look into the conventions alongside doing a code that is what one should be prepared way before we could reach that level in our lives to make it easier.

e) Contributions to open source.

The thing that I hate myself the most about is not contributing to the open source as a student. When you are student and learning you might think you don’t have enough time for contributing to the open source community as you have to deal with your academics along side but trust me it is the best and the most suitable time to get into OS comminuty as you go more professional you won’t get that much free time to do contributions rather you will be dealing with super hard real world deadlines. Wherever you are, whatever you are learning start today and contribute to the open source, and morely it might catch an eye and you will be working already while you’re a student.

These are the few thing that I could have done better in my life to transform myself from a student to professional in a better way. They are not all the things, there are a lot of thing that needed to be considered but what I felt I should have done better in my life are listed above. Hope you will find a better way to keep yourself a step futher from all your competitors.
